Premium Heatset Black and Colors
Nova is our premium heatset web offset ink. The Nova line consists of many tack-rated "sets", ranging from high tack sets like "Nova 2" suitable for super high-quality miniweb printing all the way down to low tack sets like "Nova 6", necessary for printing on newsprint. Within each tack range, different Nova "sub-series" are available, each designed to solve a certain problem or maximize a certain feature. Nova heatset Blacks offer superior transfer, drying, gloss, trap, and blue tone. Nova heatset Colors have the requisite color strength, good gloss, rub and scratch resistance, drying, transfer and press stability that all heatset inks aspire to. A special set of Nova inks is available in a complete line of mixing color bases.
Nova is designed to run on the most expensive cover stocks all the way down to better grades of newsprint with good results any time when a high-gloss, fully-toned heatset black or color is necessary for the print job. Nova Process and Special Colors will run optimally with Nova Black in first or fourth-down positions, but they will also work with any other conventionally formulated heatset black ink or color. The Nova Color tack sequence puts blue slightly above red, and red slightly above yellow.
Most Nova inks are considered "Special Order" inks or "Custom" inks, which both carry a premium charge for orders of less than four drums per color (see "How we price our products"). Inks like our Nova "DXB" line of highly toned heatset blacks are an example of a product we'd like you to order at a minimum of two drums. Nova inks can be ordered in custom shades in quantities of at least 400 lbs. per color, custom blacks at least 900 to 1800 lbs.
The proper choice of which Nova Black and Color to use for a specific application is the single most important factor in determining whether or not Nova will work on press, so always make an effort to contact us or read as much literature as you can before ordering a Nova or any other finished ink from Kerley.

Nova 4 "PS"
Series Heatset Black and Colors
Introduced late in 1993, the Nova 4 PS series of heatset web offset inks offer the best there is for you and your customer. You'll be proud to put your label on these exceptionally fine inks! You could say that the "PS" stands for "positively superior" strength and shade. In addition, the drying speed and scuff resistance of these inks put them in the top rank of world-class quality. The Nova 4 PS Series comes in these basic colors...

A suitable transparent extender for all Nova 4 PS Colors is our "Nova Extender" Vehicle found in the section called "Heatset Letdown Vehicles" further on in the catalog.
As you can see, Nova 4 PS even features a heatset neutral mixing black so you can make all of the colors below the centerline of your Color Selector. If you need a process black to go along with the Nova 4 PS colors above, we offer Nova 4 "GLX" black, a highly toned, "dense" black that works perfectly with these outstanding printing inks. Since Nova 4 PS Series inks all contain PTFE, a very effective anti-scuff agent, we do not recommend that Nova 4 PS Series inks be overprinted. With Nova 4 PS, you'll never again be caught having to make emergency batches of heatset mixing bases or heatset custom shades! Nova 4 PS colors are in stock and have no minimum order.
Nova "D"
Series Hi-tack Heatset Blacks
The "D" stands for "dense", and Nova "D" series heatset blacks are definitely just that. The Nova "D" series is the most popular series of Nova heatset black that is available in tacks above 12 points. Nova "D" series blacks are all well-toned, having 6.5% alkali blue flush in them. If you are looking for a workhorse heatset black with great density, good scuff resistance, excellent ink/water balance at an attractive price, Nova "D" series black is for you! Nova "D" series inks are available in black only as "special order" items.
Nova "DXB"
Series Heatset Blacks
A close relative of the Nova "D" series, the Nova "DXB" series has 10.5% alkali blue flush content for superior blue tone and fantastic-looking black-and-white halftones. Rarely ever will you encounter such a blue-toned heatset black as the Nova "DXB" series. All Nova "DXB" series inks are "special order" products, and are available in several tack ranges. Nova "DXB" series inks are available in black only.
Nova "GLX"
Series Heatset Black
Now available as both black and color formulations, Nova 4, 5 & 6 GLX inks are excellent for high gloss heatset web offset work. What distinguishes the Nova "GLX" blacks is their combination of excellent gloss and great print density when used on either high basis weight or light weight coated stocks. Nova "GLX" blacks are well-toned, with 6.5% alkali blue toner, making them perfect for either single color, two-color, or four-color process work. Nova 4 & 5 "GLX" are currently our two best heatset blacks. Additionally, Nova 4 GLX carries no minimum order since it is part of the Nova 4 "PS" series.
Nova "TFI"
Series Heatset Black & Colors
Nova 4 & 5 TFI black and colors are formulated for extreme scuff resistance. Use Nova "TFI" series heatset black and colors for any type of work involving problematic "matte coated" stocks, such as those found in software manuals, fine books and publications, or atlases. Nova 4 & 5 TFI black and colors are available as "special order" products only.
Nova "ET"
Series Heatset Black & Colors
Nova 2, 3, 4 & 5 "ET" black and colors are formulated for above average scuff resistance. Use Nova "ET" series heatset black and colors when you encounter unusual "buildup" or scuff-off in the folder or later in the bindery. Nova "ET" black and colors are available as "special order" products only.
Nova "LS"
Series Heatset Colors
Gain an opportunity to play the heatset game with Nova 5 "LS" and Nova 6 "LS" series economy-priced process colors! Nova "LS" series are as glossy, strong, and scuff-resistant as any high-volume heatset web set available today. But if you're faced with severe price competition, then you might want to try Nova "LS" series heatset web offset process colors. Nova 6 LS process colors are excellent for printers who run mainly newsprint and supercal stocks. Nova 5 LS process colors are best suited for printers who run offset stocks and coated stocks.
